Gross gross gross gross gross!!! The sushi here was horrid! The fish was old it was bad quality ,the muscle shooters were rotten and they tried to cover up the flavor with way too many spicy peppers. My work group sent in a to go order for at least 5 people, every singleo ne of us threw it away! We called and asked for our money back due to the fact but it was such poor quality and they said that they would give us a coupon? A coupon?!r a place that we will never ever ever go back to you again so just spent $20 for two rolls and mussel shooters that they didn't even put a lid on it spilled all over the box just so that I could throw it away! This place is insane! If you want good sushi, great sushi come over to the east side go to tsunami, go to Takashi, or sapa or even sushi groove ! I'm terrified I'm going to be spending the weekend on the toilet thanks sushi monster

Nice sushi restaurant with clean neat atmosphere. Affordable rolls. I highly recommend the Volcano Roll.

We come here often and really enjoy the soft shell crab appetizer, their sushi and the sashimi. We have never been disappointed with this place! The servers are always really nice and they bring you some delicious hot soup complimentary while you wait for your order. Out of everything I would recommend their sashimi. Generous portions and it's the most reasonably priced for what you get. So delicious!

Affordable sushi and they give HUGE pieces of fish when ordering nigiri or sashimi. They seemed understaffed at times on the weekends so expect to be there a while on weekends. Overall the food is great for the price.

Wow what a waste of time and money. We had 4 rolls total and not one was even just ok. The rolls all fell apart so we ended up using forks to scope up them. Very disappointing. The soup was again just ok. There was fried onions floating in the soup that you could tell had been in it all day they should have been put in right before serving. It's was like a congelled mess. The only high was the fried rice it was descent but not worth coming back for.

  • Alecia M.

The rolls were crumbly and fell apart, and we ordered over 7 rolls to share and really only thought 2 were "okay". Price we paid was almost double what we pay at other places that are better quality. We will not be returning.

When you order miso soup shouldn't it have miso on it if doesn't call it fish broth. The description should match the food you order like the California roll doesn't say anything about fish roe but they bury it with the stuff. I wont be going back.

Sushi Monster has been my favorite restaurant for years. I go there all the time. The servers are lovely. They take the time to learn my name and remember what I like to order. Yes sometimes they get slammed and are under staffed sometimes. But the servers do their best to handle it. The food it great! I'm never disappointed. The sushi always looks so beautiful when plated. The manager is a sweetheart. I definitely recommend it!

Since my last visit to sushi monster, they have really improved when it comes to service and execution. Perhaps the manager was reading reviews and realized that not every sushi roll needs to be put in a martini glass and have a ton of inedible decorations surrounding the plate and that focusing on taste and customer satisfaction was indeed, first priority. Simple hand rolls range from 7-9 bucks then you get the speciality rolls that can reach 15 bucks a roll. Do I think the price is worth the freshness of the fish? Some but not all. A must try- muscle shooters. They are tangy and a little but spicy and come with 3. Volcano roll- love it. The waitress noted that since this roll is baked, it will take longer. I thought that was nice of her and it really seemed like she knew studied the menu well. It's nice to have a knowledgable waitress. Bento boxes- holy tempura. Each box comes with a Cali roll, pot stickers , tempura veggies and rice with your choice of meat. They REALLY want you to eat your veggies bc the serving was huge. The salmon was a little dry but I'd get it again and mention it if it were to happen a second time. Would I come back here again? Sure bc it's close and the sushi is OK. If I'm looking for phenomenal sushi then I'd go to takashi and double if not triple my check. It's worth it though. This is a nice place and the staff is friendly.

The food was pretty good. I was a little scared by the reviews but really wanted sushi. I actually ended up getting sushi and hibachi steak both were very tasty. It is a lot of food so I wouldn't suggest getting both like I did unless you have help. The location was nice. The sign coming into the restaurant does need work but that sign has nothing to do with the food. The service was pretty good and I would love to go back when I'm in the area. The location does pick up a lot of people fast being in a shopping area , but the service is pretty quick nevertheless.

I was actually excited to come here honestly. I had always seen it, and it looked like it would be a chill location. But I fear that I "wasted" my sushi restaurant visit. There weren't a ton of fresh rolls. Everything was heavy in mayo, or cream cheese or tempura. The rolls we did get, were not rolled very well. They fell apart, the cuts of every piece were not uniform, and the ends were mostly rice. The decorations almost looked like an American went into a 99 cent store and bought "Asian looking stuff" and then just taped it all over the walls. It looks far nicer on the outside then it does on the inside. I mean seriously, they had mah jong tiles pasted to the walls. I don't like giving low reviews to mom and pop shops, but I think this place can step their game up.

Had the "sashimi regular" dinner and it was awesome! Right types of fish (16 pieces), friendly and efficient service...I'll be back!

Tried another sushi place and regret not going here. The sashimi portions are huge and taste fresh. Their steak hibachi is really good, steak is very tender.

I was disappointed with their sushi.. -Lovers roll, it was not consistent, hardly any shrimp it was all rice and crispy flakes which was drenched with teriyaki sauce. -pink lady was drenched with sauce you can't taste the fish. When you do taste the fish the salmon is not sweet, simply poor quality fish. - spicy girl, was bland it had imitation crab on one piece and the rest didn't have any? Ingredients was inconsistent and there was no flavor. -lastly the super duper, not so super.... To be honest this is not sushi, it's mixed with all sorts of overpowering supplemental ingredients which is not necessary. The flavor of fresh fish should be the key flavor. The fish quality used is the reason why it's masked with other Flavors. They can do much better if better quality ingredients were used. Please review your menu offering and taste them for your self. The cooked food looked good that's worth checking out but skip anything that includes fresh fish. My first and last visit sorry guys I wish you luck... **two stars because the cooked food looked good, I didn't taste any of it so I can't comment on that**

Food is awesome, affordable, and other than waiting a while to get our checks it's always a good time here. Awesome for families, they have a wide variety of sushi rolls that never disappoint.

Awesome sushi place! Very clean place. The workers are really friendly and the owners are so sweet! We come here often because there's never a wait and they are fast to serve you. The sushi is really affordable, come in big pieces, and great quality! A lot of special rolls. My favorite is the New York Roll and the Volcano roll. I'm honestly surprised this place is never busy. Come check it out!

Love this place, it is our go to spot. Sushi is always delicious and very affordable and the wait staff and owners are friendly and very helpful. Sashimi lunch is a great deal.

  • Belange H.

Sushi boat was fresh and reasonably priced for $32 for two people which included 12 large pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces california roll, and 10 pieces of nigiri. The 3 for $16 deal was a bit disappointing, rolls were too small but "you get what you pay for" I guess. Pros: Service, free Miso soup

Very nice place. The price is better!!! It was my first time. Very well recommended. Looking forward to taste new sushi rolls!!!

Fantastic sushi!!! Fresh fish and great service. They have a lot of different kinds of rolls. We will be going back several times. I am so glad that West Valley has a great sushi place.

This was a great find, my party of 4 and three kids went there for dinner on a friday night. It was awesome sushi. The best since i been in utah. I've so far tried 3 other places and this by far is the best. Its the usual prices. It is defiantly not a all you can eat sushi bar. They do have a 50% menu. The service was great. Our waitress was really nice she cam and talked to us but not in an annoying way. She didnt mind that our kids made a mess, she even gave the kids free mochi ice cream. We will be back!!!yes we love it so much we spent 150 dollars there and gave her $25 tip plus $5 for the sushi chef

  • Robert T.

I was not really impressed with this place. Although prices were good and they give you a lot of food, it was not the quality I would hope for. The sashimi dinner comes with 16 pieces. They actually gave me more than that, although some of it was imitation crab, which is not sashimi. Much of the sashimi was actually frozen in the center, and the slices are WAY TOO THICK. The sushi chef really needs to go back to the master for some remedial training.

  • G C.

I have definitely had better quality sushi. Our waitress wasn't that bad beside sitting around socailizing not paying attention to the fact that my roll was done 10 minutes ago just waiting for you to bring it to my table. I almost got up and did it myself I was so hungry!

This place was in the strip mall I needed to go to and BAM!!! it reached out and pulled me inside. The decor inside is nice and the place is roomy enough that chances of overcrowding are slim. The hostess was freakishly on task and practically carried me to the table. She had a bowl of miso in front of me before I could think about it which was a plus in the service category. The menu at Sushi Monster is quite large. Too large in my opinion. There are over 70 rolls on the menu. A lot of them are just different kinds of toppings on top of X roll which gives the menu a "Baskin Robins" sort of feel. One down-side to the menu (the one I was reading) is that it was filthy. There was all kinds of food/sauce/stuff inside of my menu which is a real turn off. Note to restaurant managers: CLEAN the menus once a day! I ordered 2 rolls and 2 orders of nigiri. The bill was $30. The Volcano roll was a mix of Krab, scallops, and sauce over a Philly roll. I'm not usually a fan of cream cheese in rolls but this worked. By far the best roll I had today. It was a tad-bit pricey at $10.50 but tasty. The spider roll was rather unremarkable and didn't have a lot of flavor. It was heavily battered and not freshly fried. Chewy is not how I like my spiders. The yellowfin nigiri was good and the Unagi was okay with both pieces being end pieces and rather small. Over all the place was okay. It doesn't smell like fish when you walk in (good) but didn't really give me a wow moment to draw me back.

If I could give less than one star I would. Which is hard for me to do because we have been going here 3-4 times a month and never had bad service. However tonight it was one strike after another. I ordered a Dr Pepper and was brought water. After waiting for what seemed like forever the waitress finally came and took our order. Two rolls with fried gyoza as an appetizer. A few minutes later our rolls showed up but no gyoza (which was fine, we would make sure it wasn't on our bill and carry on). In addition we had to ask for plates.... Once done with our rolls the waitress was clearing out plates and asked if we ever got our gyoza, to which we replied we hadn't, and since she was clearing our table I assumed they would just be removed from the bill. She returned a minute later apologizing and saying that our APPETIZER would be out in just a few minutes. I told her to just cancel it as we were done and ready for our check, to which her response was "well they've already started on them, so I'll just put them in a to-go box". Yes she brought them "to go" and yes they were still on our bill (even after asking to have them canceled). Needless to say I am NOT impressed and even after eating there for over a year I am seriously reconsidering ever going back.

First off this was the worst service I have ever experienced.. Two parties after us were sat down and their order was taken before ours... Our food was cold, sushi rolls looked like shit took more then 20 minutes for me to get 4 pieces of nigiri.. After we spoke to the manager she didn't seem to care at all and just brushed off our party had a bad attitude.. I have never not left a tip but this experience was so bad I had no other option.

Utah is a sea of chain restaurants as far as I could tell. But amongst the Applebees, Olive Gardens, and Chilis, I stumbled upon Sushi Monster. Now, I am pretty skeptical of raw fish so far from oceans, so I had the Hibachi Grill. I got two types of meat (Scallops and shrimp) noodles, rice, and a HUGE portion of sauteed veggies for only $10!!!! (Dont forget the free soup and salad!) was more than enough for two meals! The staff was very friendly though I think we came in just as they finished cleaning because it sorta smelled like a public swimming pool locker room. After seeing the quality of the hibachi, I would totally try their sushi. I wish there was one of these in Northern California!

Sushi Monster is "good." I personally wasn't wowed by it, but I wasn't disappointed either. The prices are reasonable, but the menu is so-so. Nothing really unique or new. Although, their ginger salad is one of my personal favorites :) For something a little more unique, I'd go to SAPA, but Sushi Monster is a good "quicky" sushi place :)

It's good. The food is fine. The lighting is weird. We went back a second time, they sat us in a booth and for some reason the spot lights were shining right in my eyes. Needless to say I was squinting during the entire meal and was a little annoyed.

  • Sarah P.

Honestly not impressed after giving it a 2nd chance. The actual sushi roll selection is sorta "vanilla" (aka blah). They have minimal to no description on the menu either. Then you ask the server & they are SO much help. (Insert sarcasm here.) The only way to eat here reasonably is to get the 2 or 3 roll lunch combo. But even then you barely have anything to pick from. Nothing unique or fun or new here. My husband & I live just a few blocks away & will drive 10-15 minutes to go to Simply Sushi instead of going here again.

I rarely take the time to write positive reviews (I usually just try to steer people away from bad restaurants)...and I've never given any restaurant 5 stars. But I just felt that I had make the effort to write a positive review this time, because this sushi place is AMAZING! I have eaten sushi all over the world, in hundreds of different restaurants, and this tonight was honestly one of the BEST sushi meals I've ever had. The nigiri pieces and rolls are HUGE! And the fish is incredibly fresh. And the prices are absolutely unbelievable. You will never find any place that has sushi this good, but prices this low. I HIGHLY recommend Sushi Monster.

For a sushi place in West Valley, this place is a nice little sushi eatery to go to. The decor is pretty standard and clean and can be a place where you can bring kids to. The plating of the food is nicely done and the quality is good. Nothing too outstanding but is tasty enough to satisfy. Personally, I liked their sushi better than their entrées. The meal I had was disproportionate between vegetables, meat, and noodles. Nonetheless, the food is decently priced but you could find better deals elsewhere. If you are stuck in West Valley and are in the mood for sushi, this place is the place to go to.

My wife and I are sushi lovers and go out for sushi at least once a month so we have tried many of the sushi places in the Salt Lake valley. We have settled in nicely as regulars at Sushi Monster. Ling-ling, the manager, is always gracious and comes by to speak with us each time we visit. She knows exactly who we are and always asks about our grandson. The wait staff is extremely attentive. Almost as soon as your are seated you are presented with a bowl of what the restaurant calls "clear soup". It is a very tasty broth with mushroom floating in it. Sushi Monster has a very long list of sushi rolls. The Volcano Roll and the Black Dragon are our favorites. The Volcano Roll is topped with crab and warm scallops when contrast very nicely to the cream cheese in the middle of the roll. The Black Dragon is topped with very tasty eel. They have an excellent eel sauce as well as a sauce that they call Yum Yum and it is - yum yum, that is. Each time we go besides our two favorites, we always try to pick one or two rolls we haven't tried. We have been disappointed a time or two with our choices, but for the most part we have always enjoyed our rolls. For me the only negative is the menu layout. All of the Sushi Rolls are listed on one page with their prices, but the description of each roll is on the reverse of the same page requiring you to flip back and forth to put the prices and ingredients together. The prices are excellent and the food is quite tasty.

Going across country once again, me and my husband had a craving for sushi. We knew we'd get to SLC a bit late, but it was a Saturday night. Yelp helped us find this place open, and it didn't disappoint! I was really pleasantly surprised that a sushi place in a strip mall would be so good- we got the Nigiri and Sashimi place which was delicious and the portion sizes of the fish are nice and thick, draped over a small portion of rice- just like it should be! We find most places not on the coast usually skimp on the fish size, but not this place. The prices were great with the specialty rolls too- nothing above $13.99 from what I remember, and they were good too. We also had the veg tempura which was excellent- all in all, it was too much food for the both of us, but we everything was excellent, with the Nigiri and Sahimi plate the star of the meal. A nice wait staff and fairly quick service too. If we go through SLC again, we'd definitely come back!

My husband and I are semi-new to sushi so we've checked places out here and there. We decided to give this place a try and we liked it. Their prices are reasonable and their service is good. Ling-ling is always working and she's great! Some of the rolls I haven't liked but my favorite is salmon katsu. Their tempura is also delicious. I'd have to say my favorite thing is their yum-yum sauce. YUMMY! Not a lot of seating so if you have more than 8 in your party, you'll have to sit at different tables. The place seems clean and the sushi is fresh.

This was our first trip to a newly-opened sushi spot outside the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City. It's probably been attracted by Valley Fair's attempt at 'renewal', and brings a little bit of Asian over to the very American faire that's popping up around the mall. My husband and I hadn'y expected to go there. We sort of happened there while trying to manage the Saturday traffic at Valley Fair to get to ANOTHER newly opened place in the mall. But it just wasn't working out and we'd been thinking about trying the place, so we pulled up, parked and looked at the menu visible just outside the door. Immediately, one of the hostesses CAME OUTSIDE to greet us, and spoke with us for a moment. They very obviously wanted our business and wanted it NOW. It was a little offputting, but we decided 'why not' and went inside. It's nice looking place -- but it was a ghost town. Only two other tables had anybody at them and it 1:30! We ordered edamame, my husband got the chicken katsu, and I ordered three rolls for us to share; simple tuna maki, an eel roll and an the 'dynamite roll'. The positives here are: The service was incredibly attentive-- even OVERLY attentive. Within the span of five minutes toward the end of our meal we were asked three times if we wanted refills by two separate servers and the manager. They were friendly, responsive, and pleasant, though -- and not a lot was going on, so trying to stay busy. When the waitress made and error on our check, she caught it before she ran our card, brought back both copies, explained the error, and apologized! (She well tipped for her excellent service today.) The katsu was fantastic! It was quite possibly perfect. It just crunchy enough, just moist enough, with the right level of golden crust over pounded flat chicken, fried to perfection. It came with a plate full of seasonal veggie stir-fried and delicious. My husband, who had been less than enthused, devoured his meal and savored every crumb and I kept stealing veggies off his plate! Presentation was AWESOME! I got my sushi plate and they had created a SCENE -- an island made with palm tree made out of cucumber slices, mayo used to create a sunny sky and clouds, and my eel roll created the waves over sushi-fish swimming in the 'sea'. This is the most artful food presented to me in a long time. The not-so-positive: The sushi, sadly, is bland. The fish is fresh enough, but not great. The deep fried dynamite roll had no pop or zing. It was all very underwhelming, and that was sad. They have some real potential here with a great staff -- but it looks like their sushi chef needs some encouragement. I gave them a three because it's not a bad place. Judged on the sushi alone it would be a two-- but service, presentation, and other meals raise it to a three. If they could knock the sushi up a knotch, this place could rise above, maybe even to four -- but right now, they REALLY gotta work on that sushi before they can make an impact, otherwise I think the place will end up short-lived and doomed. Here's hoping they can catch what's wrong and fix it.

  • Miles L.

I'm giving a 3 as it really depends on what you order and what you're expecting. Even kind of authentic sushi it is not. Any roll that seems standard fare is to avoided. It seems they don't even use sushi rice or vinegar for the (most likely) jasmine rice that they use. However the Americanized rolls especially the fried rolls were pretty good I'd have to say. Don't order any budget rolls you'll just be wasting money.

Wow, I'm really impressed at the Sushi quality for the location! Let me start over again as less of a Sushi Snob. Monster Sushi has good sushi at reasonable prices, it's not a cheapo all you can eat type place and they're not going to be stingy with the sushi. I usually stick to nigiri and for the lunch special got a plate full of sizeable slices of fish on rice. I get kind of irritated when sushi shops put a paper thin slice of fish that barely covers the rice, fish is obviously where the money goes at and the rice is basically just cheap filler. Here the fish is substantial, 2-3 times as big as the all you can eat places and so large it drapes over the rice and touches plate on both sides. It came with the standard salad and soup that most places have. I liked that the soup wasn't actually miso but was broth with a bit of onion in it (both are good but the miso is just so common). Service was great and fast, there was nothing I was ever waiting on. The one thing that bothered me slightly was how low the chairs were for the sushi bar, however if you're not too good with chopsticks it may be good since you don't have to move the food too far to your mouth. ;)

Went here for lunch and got the 3 rolls for $13 special. Overall it was a good experience. The biggest complaint was the menu was confusing and didn't explain what some of the rolls were. We ordered a boston roll without knowing what it was because there was no explanation of it and it turned out to be gross. The roles we did know were all good. The fish was fresh and flavorful. The price was good and service was good. Overall I would go back but next time make sure I know what I'm ordering so I don't order another nasty roll.

I really enjoy Sushi Monster! It is a great place when you want good, inexpensive sushi. The atmosphere is cute and the service is always exceptional. There is not much of a variety but there a few stand outs like the Volcano Roll, the Ben and Chase Roll, and the Sushi Rock Roll.

While I'm our way back from California, my wife and I stopped in to Sushi Monster. We ordered a couple rolls and the sushi and sashimi combo. For the prices we paid, I couldn't believe the cuts of fish! The chef also didn't overdo it with the rice on the nigiri either. In general just a good dining experience after a long day on the road. I'd stop back here in a heartbeat if I'm passing through SLC again.

I guess for Utah this place is considered good. The fake seafood in the Dancy roll was gross, menu says spicy honey sauce which it did not come with. According to sushi chefs the menu has changed. Like I give a........ The broth soup was great. Clean place.

Wonderful. Before I even ordered I was treated with a delicious complimentary broth. I ordered the California Spicy Roll. It came beautifully displayed and even better tasting. I was somewhat apprehensive about the price a first, but at a cool $5, I am thouroughly pleased with the sushi. Definitely will eat here again.

We were the only table when we sat down, 2 other tables came in my wife got her food, but I sat and wasn't given my food. My wife was done and I asked for the check and to not be charged for my food. She was a bi*ch and made it a point to say she wasn't expecting a tip... We will never be back here! My wife's food was good and the soup was good!!! But it was $24 for 1 roll and a beer!!!Service was reprehensible!!!!

Owner is very nice, she tries very hard to make customers happy, some of the other wait staff are just ok, the sushi takes some time but very good when they come out. Be sure to ask for yum-yum sauce, and cheat sticks for the kids :-)

I entered this restaurant with a huge sushi craving and I left with my sushi craving. When my fiance and I entered the restaurant it was very slow with only one other couple there. We ordered the purple haze sake and four rolls. We decided to try one of their expensive rolls and few cheaper ones to get a bigger variety. The purple haze was terribly sweet and I mean terribly. I love sake and this was like drinking some kind of perfumed fruit juice. Then we waited and waited for our rolls, the cell phones came out so that we could play two player games to keep ourselves entertained. When the rolls did come they were the size of english muffins which made them difficult to eat. Bite size is preferred and if they are big they should not fall into a million tiny pieces when you try to pick them up. None of the rolls were more then okay. They were pretty lack-luster in flavor and I ended up covering everything in eel sauce. Both my fiance and I decided we would not be returning and we left still wanting sushi.
